What to try in a voice perio charting demo
Your hygienist already has a rhythm for calling out perio readings. A useful demo should follow that rhythm, including the moments when a number needs correcting or the room gets noisy.
Test a sample chart from the first reading through review and saving. Include corrections, interruptions, and your dental software connection before deciding whether voice entry fits.
Start with your own charting order.
Ask the person who will use the software to lead the demo. Have them call out fictional readings in the order they normally work. Watch whether entries land on the intended tooth and site. A demonstration led entirely by the vendor can miss the small differences that matter in your operatory.
Bring a list of the measurements and findings your team records. Ask to see each one entered. Voice perio charting records spoken values; an ambient dental scribe drafts a visit note. If you need both, test both tasks separately.
Make a mistake on purpose.
Change a reading, skip a site, and go back to it. Ask the presenter to show exactly how an incorrect entry is corrected. Check whether changing one reading affects the next entry. The chart should be easy for the clinician to review as the exam proceeds.
Then pause and resume. Does the operator know where they are in the chart? Can they see what was captured? These questions are more useful than an accuracy percentage with no explanation of how it was measured.
Try it where it will be used.
In an approved trial, use your planned microphone and a room like the one where you chart. Include normal conversation and interruptions. Ask what equipment is required, how the microphone is positioned, and what happens when speech is not captured clearly.
Have more than one team member try it if several people will use it. Note the corrections, training, and setup each person needs. Speed should include review and correction time, not just the first pass through the chart.
- Can you use your usual charting order?
- Can you correct a tooth, site, or reading without losing your place?
- Can you pause, resume, and review the complete chart?
- How does the reviewed chart reach your dental record?
Finish the chart in your software.
Ask to see the final save or transfer step. Confirm your practice management system, its version, the fields that transfer, and anything staff must enter separately. An integration should be demonstrated for the work you need, not just listed on a slide.
ScribeSync offers voice perio charting and is integrated with eDental today. Other integrations can be arranged. Bring a hygienist and the person who manages your dental software to the demo so you can review the whole process together.
